Primer – the basis for professional painting

A primer creates ideal conditions for subsequent painting. It ensures an even surface, on which paints, weather protection paints and wall paints find sufficient adhesion and are not absorbed by the substrate. These primers are available for materials such as metal, wood, plastics and mineral materials such as plaster and gypsum plaster board as well as for interior and exterior use.

A primer prepares a surface so that it can then be painted, varnished or otherwise decorated. It equalizes the surface and improves the adhesion between the material and the varnish, the paint or the wood glaze. At the same time, wood, metal and other materials are well protected against atmospheric influence or exposure by a primer.

A primer is especially important for highly absorbent substrates such as plaster and plasterboard. Without a deep primer they would absorb an enormous amount of paint and drive up the cost of painting. In addition, they would have to be painted several times in order to achieve a closed surface and an overall good result. In addition, many materials differ in their absorbency in different places, meaning that the paint might get stained while drying. The primer thus forms the basis for the optical design of many surfaces.

Wood and metal primers offer additional protection

Wood requires good protection against moisture, blue stain, fungi and pests outdoors. In living areas, however, it is less endangered. For this reason, there are wooden primers for interior and exterior use. Wood primers for the interior are solvent- and biocide-free and therefore generally recognized as safe (GRAS). In the case of wood primers for the exterior, however, the protection of the wood is the main focus.

In the case of metals such as steel and sheet metal, rust protection plays an important role. A good primer therefore provides corrosion protection for the material. Thanks to the primer, the durability of fences, gates and other metal parts in the house and in the garden can be increased. Metal primers are also suitable for renovation work. In this case, however, rust spots should be removed from the metal beforehand. There are special products available for this purpose, such as the rust converter Ferroblock from our shop ADLER Farbenmeister.

Stains can be insulated with a spray before priming

Primers are often colourless or have a white colour. The latter are particularly suitable for a subsequent coating with an opaque paint. If there are spots on the surface to be painted which cannot be removed, they can be covered with an insulating spray. This spray ensures that the contamination is not solvated while painting over. They are thus no longer visible after the surface has been finished.
