Colourless wood varnishes – good protection for wood and wood-based materials

You can apply a colourless wood varnish directly to the wood or use it as the top layer for coloured wood. Apart from the matt and glossy finishes, this varnish is available in different varieties, which differ primarily in the hardness of the surface. When choosing a clear coat, it is therefore important to know how much stress the wood is subjected to later.

A transparent wood varnish protects the wood from damage.  In addition, the varnish acts as a seal. It does not allow water to penetrate, which would cause the wood to swell. Accordingly, varnished wood can be wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt.

Colourless wood varnishes in their different variants

A colourless varnish for wood is suitable for solid wood, veneered surfaces and for wood-based materials such as MDF or OSB boards.  In all cases, the varnish does not only act as a wood preservative, but also enhances the natural grain of the wood. Clear coat can be painted with a roller or a paintbrush or sprayed onto the surface with a cup gun. In addition, the clear coat is also available in a spray

For wooden furniture which is not too heavily stressed, a clear coat in water-based form is sufficient, such as our acrylic paint ADLER VariColor. Its surface is cured when the water contained has evaporated. Even better protection against scratches and damage is provided by the ADLER SoloPlast on a solvent basis, since its surface is very robust after curing.  Both products are available from our shop ADLER-Farbenmeister in a silky matt and a glossy finish.

n addition, there is the all-weather paint or boat paint, which is particularly weather-proof.  You can also use it to paint your garden furniture and other structural elements in the garden that are constantly exposed to the weather.

A further variant in the area of the clear coats is the parquet varnish, which you will find in our shop in the floor seal section.  It is particularly resistant to mechanical stress and therefore also suitable as a stairs varnish

The clear coat as a protective film for coloured paints

For painting your furniture, you can use a clear coat alone. If you intend the wood to have a colour however, it is also possible to paint the wood first in the desired colour shade or to stain it and to use the clear coat as a finish.  In this way, the coat of paint is well protected and gets a nice gloss. If, on the other hand, the clear coat is applied directly to the wood, two layers of varnish are usually required. By means of an intermediate sanding after the first drying phase, you ensure that the second varnish creates a smooth surface.
