Concrete sealing – the protective layer for concrete surfaces

Concrete coatings protect the concrete from dirt, water and other liquids, so that no stains are formed. These seals are available in different versions for indoor and outdoor use as well as in variants for heavily and less heavily stressed floors. They make floors and other surfaces of concrete look better, have longer durability and require less maintenance due to the reduced dust formation.

Concrete has a longer life when it is sealed. In this way it is protected from water, oils, greases and other substances that could penetrate the pores. This makes the concrete easier to clean and less dust forms. Above all, in living areas a sealed concrete floor looks better maintained. Seals are available in various colour shades, which means that the room can even be coloured with them.

Concrete coatings for indoor and outdoor use

Regarding concrete sealings a distinction must be made between the products for indoor and outdoor use.

The former are used, for example, in basements, garages and on floors in workshops and warehouses.

A concrete coating for exterior use is suitable for stairways and facades. This area also includes the road marking paints, which are often used to paint kerbstones in order to draw attention to potential tripping edges. This concrete coating is yellow or white and thus easily visible.

Concrete sealings differ in their durability

For less heavily stressed floors, for example in the basement, the simple concrete seals usually suffice. They are also used in boiler rooms and in the coating of heating oil tanks because they are resistant to heating oil. For flooring in commercial areas, however, the 2-component floor coatings are more suitable. They are made on the basis of epoxy resin and polyamide and are very abrasion resistant due to the addition of a hardener. In addition, these concrete coatings are resistant to fuels, oils and numerous alkaline solutions and acids.

The processing of floor seals

The concrete seal from our shop ADLER Farbenmeister can be painted, rolled or sprayed. The floor should be thoroughly cleaned beforehand. In the case of strongly sanded concrete, it is also sensible to paint the floor with a deep primer beforehand. It closes the pores of the concrete so that the concrete seal can be evenly applied. This pretreatment is important if the concrete is to be subsequently painted with a floor paint, because on surfaces which differ in their absorbency it can lead to stained drying. A particularly smooth floor like screed, on the other hand, can easily be roughened in order to improve the adhesion of the seal. Concrete seals are generally water-thinnable, meaning that they can also be applied in a thin layer.
